Archivi Migranti/Surrogates from Elsewhere (Bologna, Italy - 2015)
Il Centro di Documentazione Arcigay Il Cassero in Bologna, Italy, one of the original participants in Migrating Archives, invited Migrating Archives to Bologna as part of their yearly Gender Bender Festival. It opened on November 1, 2015 at the Museo d'Arte Moderna di Bologna.
Archivi Migranti / surrogates from elsewhere expands Migrating Archives to include a new organization (the Leslie Lohman Museum in New York) and two new components:
- A metaphorical gift from each archive organization.
- Conversations between archive subjects based on their actual words as found in their archives.
I reconnected with each organization and engaged in discussions about what might be a suitable gift to travel to Italy, one I could fabricate for the exhibition in Bologna. Some gifts are based on actual archive artifacts, others I imagined more indirectly. I also asked for details on what individuals in the selected delegate archives have said or written in order to put them in conversation with each other.
In all, thirteen archive organizations are represented in Archivi Migranti / surrogates from elsewhere.
